Frequently asked questions

How do insurance groups work?

Cars are assigned to one of 50 insurance groups by the Group Rating Panel (made up of ABI members and Thatcham Research). Group 1 is the cheapest to insure, group 50 the most expensive. Factors include repair costs, performance, safety features, and theft rates.

How accurate is this estimate?

This is a rough indicative estimate. Actual premiums depend on many more factors including postcode, occupation, annual mileage, claims history, modifications, and the specific insurer. Use comparison sites for accurate quotes.

How much does no claims bonus save?

Each year of no claims bonus typically reduces your premium by around 8%, up to a maximum discount of about 65% with 8+ years. Protecting your no claims bonus (for a small extra cost) means it is not affected if you make a claim.

Why is car insurance so expensive for young drivers?

Drivers under 25 are statistically more likely to have accidents. Insurers charge higher premiums to reflect this higher risk. A 19-year-old can expect to pay 2-3 times more than a 35-year-old for the same car. Black box (telematics) policies can help reduce costs for younger drivers who drive safely.

What insurance group is my car?

You can check your car's insurance group on the Thatcham Research website or through any comparison site. Popular cars like the Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Fiesta are typically in groups 6-15, while performance cars and luxury vehicles sit in groups 35-50.
