Frequently asked questions

Is there a UK government grant for electric cars in 2026?

No. The UK plug-in car grant for private buyers was withdrawn on 14 June 2022. There are no plans to reinstate it. Grants remain available for electric vans, wheelchair-accessible vehicles, and motorcycles.

What EV grants are still available in the UK?

As of 2026, grants remain for: small electric vans (up to £2,500), large electric vans (up to £5,000), wheelchair-accessible vehicles (up to £2,500), and electric motorcycles (up to £500). These are applied automatically at the dealer.

Are there any other financial benefits to buying an EV?

Yes. Electric cars benefit from the lowest Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax rate at 2% for company cars, zero VED road tax for cars registered before April 2025, and exemption from the London Congestion Charge and ULEZ. Home charger installation may qualify for the OZEV grant of £350.

Does the OZEV grant still exist for home chargers?

Yes. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) provides up to £350 towards the cost of installing a home charger. Eligibility extends to homeowners, tenants, and landlords who have off-street parking.
