Frequently asked questions

How does this affordability calculator work?

You enter the maximum amount you want your monthly take-home pay to drop. The calculator works backwards from that figure, accounting for income tax savings, NI savings, and BIK tax, to tell you the maximum gross monthly lease you could sacrifice.

Why does salary affect what I can afford?

Your salary determines your marginal income tax and NI rates. A higher-rate taxpayer saves 40% IT + 2% NI on each pound sacrificed, so a £250 take-home impact buys a much larger gross lease than for a basic-rate taxpayer who saves only 20% + 8%.

Is this figure guaranteed?

No. This is an estimate based on current 2026/27 marginal rates. Your actual take-home reduction may differ slightly due to NI band boundaries, pension deductions, student loan repayments, and other payroll items. Use this as a guide and confirm exact figures with your employer.

Should I sacrifice the maximum I can afford?

Not necessarily. You must remain above National Minimum Wage after sacrifice, and your employer may cap sacrifice at 30-40% of gross pay. Also consider that sacrificing salary reduces your earnings for mortgage applications and may affect certain benefits.
