Frequently asked questions

How much is road tax in 2026/27?

The standard annual VED rate for 2026/27 is £190 for all cars registered after April 2017 (after their first year). First-year rates vary from £0 for zero-emission vehicles to £2,745 for the highest CO2 band. Cars with a list price over £40,000 pay an additional £645 per year premium supplement in years 2-6.

Do electric cars pay road tax now?

Yes. From April 2025, electric vehicles pay VED for the first time. They get a £0 first-year rate but then pay the standard rate (£190 in 2026/27) from year 2 onwards. EVs are exempt from the premium supplement regardless of list price.

What is the premium supplement?

Cars with an original list price (including options) over £40,000 pay an additional £645 per year on top of the standard rate. This applies from years 2 to 6 of the car's registration. After 6 years (from year 7 onwards), only the standard rate applies. Electric vehicles are exempt.

Can I pay VED monthly?

Yes. You can pay VED by direct debit monthly (with a 5% surcharge) or every 6 months (with a 10% surcharge per payment). Paying annually is the cheapest option. You can tax your car online at gov.uk/vehicle-tax.
