How Gravel Calculator works

How gravel weight is calculated

Volume = Length × Width × Depth (convert depth from inches to feet). Weight = Volume × Density. Crushed stone weighs approximately 100 lb per cubic foot (2,700 lb or 1.35 tons per cubic yard). Actual density varies by stone type, moisture content, and particle size — order 5–10% extra to account for variation.

Gravel density by type

Common gravel densities (dry): pea gravel 96 lb/cu ft, crushed stone/gravel 100 lb/cu ft, river rock 97 lb/cu ft, limestone 95 lb/cu ft, decomposed granite 100 lb/cu ft. Wet gravel can weigh 10–20% more. A cubic yard of crushed stone weighs approximately 2,700 lb (1.35 tons).

Recommended gravel depths

Walkways and paths: 2–3 inches of gravel over landscape fabric. Driveways: 4–6 inches total (2–3 inch base layer of crushed stone plus 2–3 inch top layer). Drainage and French drains: 6–12 inches. Patio base: 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone. Always compact each 2-inch layer separately for stability.

Gravel types and uses

Pea gravel (3/8"): decorative paths, playgrounds, between pavers. Crushed stone (#57, 3/4"): driveways, drainage, base material. River rock (1–3"): decorative, drainage, dry creek beds. Crusher run (mix of dust and stone): compactable base for driveways and patios. #2 stone (2–3"): drainage, retaining wall backfill.

Ordering and delivery

Gravel is sold by the ton for bulk delivery. Most suppliers have a minimum order (typically 1–5 tons) with delivery fees of $50–$200 depending on distance. One full-size pickup truck holds about 1 cubic yard (1.35 tons) of gravel. For small amounts, gravel is available in bags from hardware stores at higher per-unit cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

A typical 12×40 ft single-car driveway at 4 inches deep needs about 5.9 cubic yards (8 tons) of crushed stone. Double that for a two-car driveway. Add 10% for waste and compaction. Driveways typically use a 2–3 inch base layer of #2 stone topped with 2–3 inches of #57 crushed stone.

How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard of gravel weighs approximately 1.35 tons (2,700 lb) for crushed stone. Lighter materials like pea gravel weigh about 1.30 tons per cubic yard. The exact weight depends on the stone type, size, and moisture content.

How deep should a gravel driveway be?

A gravel driveway should be 4–6 inches total depth. The ideal construction is: 4 inches of compacted #2 stone as a base, topped with 2 inches of smaller crushed stone (#57 or pea gravel). Compact each layer separately. Over soft soil, add a layer of geotextile fabric first.

How much does a ton of gravel cost?

Bulk gravel costs $35–$70 per ton depending on type and region. Pea gravel and crushed stone are on the lower end ($35–$50/ton). Decorative stone and river rock cost more ($50–$100/ton). Add $50–$200 for delivery. Bagged gravel from a store costs effectively $80–$150 per ton.

What is the best gravel for a driveway?

Crushed stone (#57 or #67) is the best top layer for driveways — the angular edges lock together under traffic. Use #2 crushed stone as a base layer. Avoid pea gravel for driveways — its round shape means it migrates and creates ruts. River rock is decorative but also unsuitable for traffic areas.

How do I keep gravel from spreading?

Install edging (metal, plastic, or stone) along gravel paths and driveways to contain the material. Use angular crushed stone instead of round gravel — angular pieces interlock and resist displacement. Compact the gravel after spreading with a plate compactor. For driveways, a proper base layer of compacted crusher run prevents the top layer from sinking.
